Visual Art General Disclosure Statement
Belief Statement:
In my Professional opinion: Art is the most valuable experience you will ever have. The act of doing
Artistic activities teaches self control, hand /eye coordination, patience, problem solving, creativity, self
expression, attention to detail, aesthetic appreciation, self worth, and much more. It is the essence of life.
Creating things, from your own imagination or practicing skills and techniques in an appropriate manner, gives
a person the greatest sense of satisfaction. The elements and Principles of art can be applied to every aspect
of our lives, to enhance and enrich this mortal experience and give you happiness and self confidence to last
a lifetime.
Rules:
I have two Basic Rules: “Always does the Right Thing!” & “Be Responsible for your own choices!” I
do not feel that other specific rules are needed because everything falls under these two rules. This is
inclusive of all other areas in life and in this educational institution in general. If you need to be told
what not to do, refer to your kindergarten teacher! Remember: Life is not fair! It is not meant to be! Get
used to it and get over it!
Hall Pass: If you insist on leaving my class room without my permission for any reason and for any amount of time,
I will mark you truant and refer you to the administration! Consider this your warning!
Dress code: There is a dress code in effect for Box Elder High School and I expect every student
to follow it. I will seek to discreetly refer any violators to the office where they will remedy the situation
before being readmitted into class. Refer to your student guide book!
How does it work? At the beginning of each project unit,
I will present a concept and identify the principals and elements to be learned. This will be in the form
of a lecture, video, guest lecturer, slides or other methods appropriate to the situation. Afterwards, I will
present a problem in the form of a project with a specific medium or technique which you as the student must
solve in the creation of a unique work of art.
Each project will take between 3 to 12 hours of work time.
You will need to take projects home to finish them. I would recommend a Portfolio, or carrying bag, to
tote them to and from School. You cannot afford to do nothing in class! You will be losing both participation
points and project points.
Lectures: If a lecture or presentation is missed, the student will need to make an appointment with me
for bee time or before or after school or at lunch. It is the responsibility of the student to make and then attend this
appointment.
Class Points:
Because art is an active learning environment, it is imperative that the student
be present and working in each class to receive a passing grade. Therefore; 100 points will be given each student at the
beginning of the term. A loss of all or part of these points will occur if the student is, late without a late note, unprepared,
(without materials or a pencil) bothering other students, or simply not participating or working in class. Class points account
for approximately one sixth of the final grade. All points will be kept grade book online which the student or parents could see at any time.
Citizenship:
Your citizenship grade will be determined using the criteria set forth in BEHS policy which criteria include: participation, completion
of assignments, working in groups, and in-class behavior.
Homework: Each term, a research paper will be assigned either on a specific artist, period of art, technique, or
concept. This will be typed and printed. No plagiarizing from the internet or other sources will be allowed. This will be done entirely
outside of class unless other arrangements are made with the teacher. Other projects may be required outside of class at the direction
and discretion of the teacher. Other projects if not finished in class will be finished up at home
Sketchbook
12 drawings (one per week) 'Realistic’ things. No Cartoons or simple line drawings.
Draw from photographs either in magazines or personal reference material, from life
situations or draw what is reflected in the mirror.
Make up Assignments:
Make up class work will only be allowed for school or administrative excused
attendance. I will allow three
days per term make up of participation points except for rare extenuating
circumstances.
Grading: Grading procedures will
conform to Box Elder High School grading standards. Students are graded by the
amount of effort, quality of project, adherence to criteria, and time spent on
each project. Each project will be graded by a standard scale based upon time
allotted to complete the project. This usually varies by method and materials as
well as technique and abilities of the artist.
An accumulation of project points and participation points will be calculated and
divided into the amount of points possible, giving a percentage transposed into
the following grades:
The Percentage (%) corresponds to a letter grade; the breakdown of such grade is
listed below.
93% - 100% -- A 87% - 90% -- B+ 80% - 82% -- B- 73% - 76% -- C 67% - 69% -- D+ 60% - 62% -- D-
